Fall semester is off to a great start!
We welcomed a new student, Lukas Westermann Salas, who joins us from University of Kansas where he studied the phylogenomics of Monarcha Flycatchers in Robert Moyle’s lab. We’re excited to add Lukas to the mix.
In September, members of the lab volunteered as guest mentors with the Monticello High School AP Environmental Science class field trip weekend to Mountain Lake Biological Station. We fun helping the students develop research questions, collect data, and put together presentations sharing what they found. We also enjoyed spending time with our friends and co-mentors Dave McLeod and Siena Guttormson from the McLeod Lab at Mary Baldwin University. It’s great to get outside, spend time with friends, and help students develop research skills!

Our former undergraduate researcher Madeline Livingston came by the lab for a visit during alumni weekend. During her time in the lab, Madeline did a Distinguished Majors Program project where she studied the genetic diversity of the meiotic recombination protein PRDM9 in rattlesnakes. Last Spring, she was awarded 2nd place in the 42nd Annual Richard D. Katz Undergraduate Biology Symposium for her research! Madeline now studies meiosis in humans as a Postbaccalaureate Fellow at the National Institutes of Health. It was great catching up and hearing about her awesome new position!
